Thoughts On The Nintendo Switch Presentation

Nintendo ContentID claimed this video so I’m now presenting this as Jimquisition Dot Com material. I’ll benefit off this somehow!

Anyway, here are my initial thoughts on the presentation from last night. It was an okay presentation.

As far as what I think of some of the details that emerged after the presentation… just wait until Monday. Nintendo delivered the goods as far as material.

i love it personally. the joycon is a brilliant set of controllers, especially since most of its market is kids, not us old-skool gamers, the main home/mobile hybrid concept is a dream for the next pokemon/mario/etc game, and anyone who cares about tech specs is a soulless old nerd who doesnt understand fun. but…. 299 is too damn much for this. how the hell is the nintendo more expensive than the sony or xbox?

diamond

I don’t know if kids are going to care about the controllers, that whole bit with actors flailing around with those controllers looked like it was created by middle-aged business execs desperately trying to make things “hip” for the kids, it was really cringeworthy, I think most kids would rather use a tablet or an iPhone then an overpriced knock-off which the Switch looks like.

I remember shelling out a lot more than $300 for a PS4 in 2015 (so not even terribly close to launch). The dirty thing about the Switch is that a lot of stuff that seems like it ought be automatically included (like the charging station) is being sold extra at a premium.

GloatingSwine

The dock/charging station is included, you can just buy extra ones (presumably if you have several tellies you can just take the system to different ones).

What should be in the box and isn’t is the pro controller.

some of my randoms thoughs on the Wii2, ehm, the Switch Everything they shown was possible on the WiiU, there was no need for a new console for that stuff…Nintendo just wanted to quickly bury the WiiU rotting corpse far from people’s eyes. Switch’s battery life isnt the problem to me…but they stuffed the joycon with tech that nobody will use only with the result of inflating the price… also i bet my balls motion controls will never spawn a 1:1 accurate game– it will be a woobble controller to press button thing ,again, like Wii was. it’s alot of… Read more »

Is $300 really a decent price? It’s a low powered console and the other two consoles are cheaper and have huge libraries. I assumed this was going to be the value console, and it’s not.

OctopussGrift
Guest
OctopussGrift

I thought the pro and scorpio were both around 400. The pro and scorpio will have large libraries at launch but it seems unlikely that either will end up with many exclusives. In any case there isn’t a great reason to get any of them any time soon unless an old console craps out and needs a replacement.

diamond

Sony and Microsoft have both it made clear that neither the Pro or Scorpio will have games exclusives to them that won’t run on the regular PS4 or XB1(doing so would be a suicidal move).

The base model Xbox One and PS4 are much cheaper, though. Xbox One you can get for under $300, and PS4 you can get at $300 with a game. And both go on sale regularly. Switch is going to sit there at $300 without a game for months.

Fair enough.
On a side note I like that the Sterling fans aren’t the same ravening consumers that apparently most gamers are. I like to come here when I feel any hype so that I wait on my purchases. I once almost pre-purchased colonial marines but decided to wait because of a Jimquisition.

Just looked up the specs of the Switch, wow that’s not good: only 720p? Only 32 GB of storage(which you have to buy Micro-SD cards to expand)? Pathetic battery life(my PSP can probably last longer then the Switch can on a full charge), no thank you.

ThinkerT
Guest
ThinkerT

720p is fine for that size and for battery life tradeoff, it’ll be 1080p on a TV screen. You won’t see much of a difference between 720p and 1080p on that small of a screen anyway. 32GB isn’t great, but MicroSD is cheap. And your PSP has a much smaller screen, so of course it’ll outlast something with a screen that size. 2+ hours is actually not bad for gaming on something that size.

There are plenty of things to be concerned about with the switch, but yours are pretty lame, IMO.

iPads game a lot longer than 2 hours, and at a much higher resolution. Granted they don’t cost $299.

I’d say all of them (seriously). It will do 3.5 hours on the gruelling Manhatten GFXBench which loads the GPU to 100%.

It runs at 720p native. The 1080p will be an upscaled resolution. It will still be 720p native.

Jiryn

Jiryn

According to Nintendo it downscales to 720 when in portable mode.
So maybe 1080 is the native, but the screen only supports 720.
Mario Kart Deluxe is 1080/60 native when I. TV mode according to Gamestop.

According to IGN Zelda BOTW runs better, at a higher resolution, frame rate and load times on the Switch.

florian
Guest

From what I understand mobile will be 720/60 native (see laurak’s tweets on botw). Since the screen is so small, lowering the native res would be an acceptable way to increase battery life imo.

Docking the system allows full use of GPU like many laptops when plugged in..

Though bad news, while it can render UP to 1080p, Zelda when docked goes to… 900p according to Polygon

A relatively low resolution was always going to be on the cards for a portable that can run Skyrim. That said, ironically the nVidia Shield (which the Switch was obviously “inspired” by) is 1920×1200.

diamond

That was kind of my point, if you’re going to rip something off, at least try and match it’s resolution.

Nitrium
Guest
Nitrium

I don’t think it was “ripped off” as such. It seems fairly clear that nVidia partnered with Nintendo to develop the Switch. Sort of a like an nVidia Nintendo Shield 2. It’s lame because nVidia tried to pack to much GPU into a battery powered device so it could better compete with the dedicated consoles (and run Skyrim).

I was not one bit impressed, given Nintendo’s shaky history of online support, I don’t trust them to properly run a paid online service. Super Mario Odyssey just does not look right, something about Mario in a world that looks more realistic just falls into Uncanny Valley territory, and the fact that it’s not coming out for almost a year isn’t going to help Nintendo any. This is Nintendo’s worst launch line-up yet, Zelda alone isn’t going to cut it. I thought this was a throwback to an older game, that I swear had the same name. It must be Mario is Missing! Which I think was a Carmen Sandiego take on Mario.

I’d post a link to Bing! or Google images, but it will be “moderated” if I do. Could there be a connection?

diamond
Guest

Yeah that was it, I thought of the same thing, but considering how weak that game was(along with Mario’s Time Machine) I don’t think a connection to that game as a good idea.

Some people have made Sonic Adventure comparisons, I get why, but I just don’t see it working as well for Mario as it did for Sonic for a number of reasons.

Stormbringer

We enjoyed the games. We would not have known they were “educational” (because they don’t exist in Candy Land.)

It’s not untread territory, and it’s not surprising that Nintendo would have to stretch to come up with a new theme after Mario Galaxy. And that’s not a bad title for a major Mario game. It’s just too bad that Mario is Missing! is probably a better game than anything Nintendo can squirt out today. (And it probably wasn’t even made by Nintendo.)

diamond

Like James Rolfe said, the problem was those games didn’t sound like eductional games from the titles, and they weren’t that good at teaching history(one game actually acts like King Kong exists in real life).

Didn’t you see the rest of the Mario trailer? There’s more to it than the realistic city. Judging from the trailer, it looks like the game is going for some kind of surreal, realism meets fantasy angle, which I surprisingly don’t object to. The way I see it, the city shown is either gonna be a one off level, or a hub world, so if you don’t like it, you’ll know you won’t have to spend a whole lotta time there. For now, Mario, Zelda, and maybe that boxing game are the only games I’m interested in, which is not… Read more »

The art style of the city in Mario Odyssey didn’t look that much different to me than Mario Kart 64’s Toad Turnpike or the city one in the Wii game with different paths to be fair… although the humans maybe was a little strange. Also I’d argue that the actual definition of Uncanny Valley does not at all apply to what I saw to be a late PS2 era early PS3 level of textures and models, but that’s just me being a pedantic asshole.

It’s overpriced, the peripherals are overpriced and they didn’t reveal specs, which means they gotta suck. Bad, bad news. Still, it looks like, at least for the very beginning, it’s gonna have 3rd party support, so it’s not going to fail.

I find it very sad that Nintendo manages to coast on 90s nostalgia alone without actually delivering on the tech side. Now they seem to be going the Apple way and charging a little fortune for hardware.

I was not interested in it before the reveal and I’m not interested now either.

Looks interesting some of the games look fun and I like the portable aspect but as I’ve said before, Im going to wait 3-6 months. I don’t buy consoles at launch. I remember all of those stupid Hi-def remasters on the PS4 and XBOX-1 and how much the Wii-U struggled (although that’s the one I ultimately bought).

Am I alone in the thought that this console gen, with rare exceptions, has been kind of crap?

You can say that about pretty much every gen though, for me I personally don’t give a shit about how “original” a game is so much as how enjoyable it is.

I very much agree with the Jimquisition episode “Innovation: Gaming’s Snake Oil” where Jim says that too many people obsess over Innovation in games to the point where it’s detrimental to other games that don’t sell as well simply because they’re not “original” enough.

I just don’t see how the Switch really differentiates itself from the Android/iOS tablets. Sure it has proper controls and a handful of exclusive games etc, but at the end of the day isn’t this just a Vita crossed with an iPad? Did anyone ask for that product?

George

My interpretation is that the portable tablet’esc functionality is more of secondary. Like a bonus for a “gamer” who wants to play games that are “not candy crush.”
Not to say that tablets don’t have some amazing games but I think Nintendo is playing on that perception.

It looks very much like the Nvidia Shield, it looks like Nintendo is just no longer capable of selling a console without some wacky gimmick attached to it, probably because they keep hoping for another runaway success like the Wii, but I don’t see lightning striking twice in this case, alot of the major sales for the Wii came from people buying them in bulk for places like hospitals, and people forget that after a couple of years, sales for the Wii dramatically decreased.

Nintendo Switch, more like Nintendo Shits, according to some. 😛

Doesn’t impress me overall… I’m hoping this doesn’t actually completely replace the focused handheld division of Nintendo for a long time. Jim raises some good points, though I see no issue with including motion controls again (even if they did go on about them a bit long). Still, reading all the negativity I keep getting the feeling some people desperately want to see Nintendo crash and burn and they’d be having a go regardless of what was shown. Don’t get me wrong, Nintendo need to clarify their online plans, the overall presentation was only OK and the current ‘launch window lineup’ could do with some padding (but indies and VC hasn’t been covered yet, so that may well fill it out),… Read more »

People wanted Nintendo to die ever since Sega and Sony butted heads with Nintendo in the console wars. Most of the people whining now are just “grown up” (lol) gamers that simply don’t like what Nintendo has to offer anymore and the rest are new gen players hating on Nintendo because it’s trendy.

Or ya know people who used to like Nintendo but have grown tired of watching them repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot over and over again, which would be me, I bought a Gamecube and really liked it, I also sort of liked the Wii and Wii U(though Nintendo did overdo it on the gimmicks with the controllers and there was a lot of trash on both systems).

There is absolutely no reason for the Switch to have this weak of a launch lineup. If the games in development aren’t ready yet why not port over the very best that the Wii U had to offer? Having the cream of the Wii U crop available at launch would be a huge draw for everyone that sat out on the Wii U. What’s truly baffling to me is their handling of the Virtual Console. They could be marketing the Switch as a one-stop shop for every beloved Nintendo classic under the sun. Imagine having Super Mario Bros, 64, Sunshine,… Read more »

My take away was that I see no compelling reason to buy one until 2018 at the earliest. Zelda, as much as I like the franchise, is just a usual single player game, one that won’t change if I wait a year to play it. But the online service crap and the insane prices of the accessories plus the patented Nintendo trickle of games throughout the year makes being an Early Adopter of this system too risky. I know I will get one at some point. Monster Hunter is going to happen eventually, and Mario Odyssey looks like fun, but I don’t see anything that entices me to get one at launch. Please don’t use the snow effect in the future. There’s no way that compresses well. Some of us have bandwidth caps. A lot of the U.S. doesn’t have quality Internet access, and I hear people use phones too.

EDITED: In fact in general, it would be nice to limit full-motion-video (lots of movement going on all over the screen) to short segments. The video game footage playing for no reason in the background really just makes the video much fatter to download. A lot of video game videos on YouTube and elsewhere are mostly static images. I think he meant streaming, and in that case, I’m pretty sure YouTube compresses their videos into constant bitrates anyway, so there’s not much that can be done about that. (At least, that’s how they did it last I checked, and it’s been about a week since then. They’re overdue to switch things up for no reason again.)

Stormbringer

Is that what the glitching is about? Some of that comes from the very limited color spectrum of LED screens and digital exposures.

What I know is video compression (which is what makes video streaming possible) tracks the motion of pixel clusters over time. When there is basically whitenoise, it’s very hard to compress it with video compression algorithms, so it’s as if the video is uncompressed.
