Thoughts On The Nintendo Switch Presentation

Nintendo ContentID claimed this video so I’m now presenting this as Jimquisition Dot Com material. I’ll benefit off this somehow!

Anyway, here are my initial thoughts on the presentation from last night. It was an okay presentation.

As far as what I think of some of the details that emerged after the presentation… just wait until Monday. Nintendo delivered the goods as far as material.

i love it personally. the joycon is a brilliant set of controllers, especially since most of its market is kids, not us old-skool gamers, the main home/mobile hybrid concept is a dream for the next pokemon/mario/etc game, and anyone who cares about tech specs is a soulless old nerd who doesnt understand fun. but…. 299 is too damn much for this. how the hell is the nintendo more expensive than the sony or xbox?

some of my randoms thoughs on the Wii2, ehm, the Switch Everything they shown was possible on the WiiU, there was no need for a new console for that stuff…Nintendo just wanted to quickly bury the WiiU rotting corpse far from people’s eyes. Switch’s battery life isnt the problem to me…but they stuffed the joycon with tech that nobody will use only with the result of inflating the price… also i bet my balls motion controls will never spawn a 1:1 accurate game– it will be a woobble controller to press button thing ,again, like Wii was. it’s alot of… Read more »

Is $300 really a decent price? It’s a low powered console and the other two consoles are cheaper and have huge libraries. I assumed this was going to be the value console, and it’s not.

Just looked up the specs of the Switch, wow that’s not good: only 720p? Only 32 GB of storage(which you have to buy Micro-SD cards to expand)? Pathetic battery life(my PSP can probably last longer then the Switch can on a full charge), no thank you.

I was not one bit impressed, given Nintendo’s shaky history of online support, I don’t trust them to properly run a paid online service. Super Mario Odyssey just does not look right, something about Mario in a world that looks more realistic just falls into Uncanny Valley territory, and the fact that it’s not coming out for almost a year isn’t going to help Nintendo any. This is Nintendo’s worst launch line-up yet, Zelda alone isn’t going to cut it. I have little to no faith in this system selling very well, especially not with it’s awkward March release date(Feels… Read more »

It’s overpriced, the peripherals are overpriced and they didn’t reveal specs, which means they gotta suck. Bad, bad news. Still, it looks like, at least for the very beginning, it’s gonna have 3rd party support, so it’s not going to fail.

I find it very sad that Nintendo manages to coast on 90s nostalgia alone without actually delivering on the tech side. Now they seem to be going the Apple way and charging a little fortune for hardware.

I was not interested in it before the reveal and I’m not interested now either.

Looks interesting some of the games look fun and I like the portable aspect but as I’ve said before, Im going to wait 3-6 months. I don’t buy consoles at launch. I remember all of those stupid Hi-def remasters on the PS4 and XBOX-1 and how much the Wii-U struggled (although that’s the one I ultimately bought).

Am I alone in the thought that this console gen, with rare exceptions, has been kind of crap?

I just don’t see how the Switch really differentiates itself from the Android/iOS tablets. Sure it has proper controls and a handful of exclusive games etc, but at the end of the day isn’t this just a Vita crossed with an iPad? Did anyone ask for that product?

Nintendo Switch, more like Nintendo Shits, according to some. 😛

Doesn’t impress me overall… I’m hoping this doesn’t actually completely replace the focused handheld division of Nintendo for a long time. If future Pokemon games will only be on switch, then from my perspective it will be as if my favorite IP’s going to be gated off behind a console that isn’t anywhere near as straightforward and solidly game-stocked as I was hoping…

Jim raises some good points, though I see no issue with including motion controls again (even if they did go on about them a bit long). Still, reading all the negativity I keep getting the feeling some people desperately want to see Nintendo crash and burn and they’d be having a go regardless of what was shown. Don’t get me wrong, Nintendo need to clarify their online plans, the overall presentation was only OK and the current ‘launch window lineup’ could do with some padding (but indies and VC hasn’t been covered yet, so that may well fill it out),… Read more »

There is absolutely no reason for the Switch to have this weak of a launch lineup. If the games in development aren’t ready yet why not port over the very best that the Wii U had to offer? Having the cream of the Wii U crop available at launch would be a huge draw for everyone that sat out on the Wii U. What’s truly baffling to me is their handling of the Virtual Console. They could be marketing the Switch as a one-stop shop for every beloved Nintendo classic under the sun. Imagine having Super Mario Bros, 64, Sunshine,… Read more »

My take away was that I see no compelling reason to buy one until 2018 at the earliest. Zelda, as much as I like the franchise, is just a usual single player game, one that won’t change if I wait a year to play it. But the online service crap and the insane prices of the accessories plus the patented Nintendo trickle of games throughout the year makes being an Early Adopter of this system too risky. I’m genuinely expecting an initial burst of sales and then a sharp decline, followed by Nintendo doing a 3DS and cutting the price… Read more »

It’s $470 AUD (Australian). I would have pre orderd if it was $350 AUD. Zelda looks great, but not $470 + $100 just to play the bloody thing.

Also was it just me or did the new mario look aweful…………..?

I’m getting a Switch regardless (soon after release if they actually supply enough), but it looks like I won’t be getting Spla2n unless the price for online is way lower than anticipated, which sucks given how excited I was for it.

I know I will get one at some point. Monster Hunter is going to happen eventually, and Mario Odyssey looks like fun, but I don’t see anything that entices me to get one at launch. I am more interested in Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, and the Wipeout clone (Fast RMX?) than anything else. If those all come out relatively close to launch then I will be interested. I don’t care at all about the Zelda game.

I think I’m just super tight because the price doesn’t work for me $400 CAD is what the ps4 launched at. Much rather they take some of the unnecessary shit out of the joycons.

If you’re ever short of content Jim, try commentating over a tree house or other promotional video. I think there’s potential for Wogan at Eurovision amusement.

Scummmy pre-order story time! So I started going down the list of electronics retaliers to secure my pre-order after the presentation last night. I finally managed to grab one at Walmart. The pre-order went through fine, they said I’d get mine a little bit after launch day, but that’s fine, at least I’d get it. The payment went through on my credit card. I woke this morning, to get an email from Walmart saying “Sorry, we had to cancel your pre-order due to your card being declined. Turns out my bank decided to do run its fraud_detection.exe and it automatically… Read more »

I was just happy to see that Nintendo still cares about Star Fox, I mean why else would the entire presentation be designed after a Star Fox boss battle. Everything seemed pretty strong until the end when they revealed the giant glowing red weak points that were their online plan and accessory pricing for their competitors to shoot at.

Please don’t use the snow effect in the future. There’s no way that compresses well. Some of us have bandwidth caps. A lot of the U.S. doesn’t have quality Internet access, and I hear people use phones too.

EDITED: In fact in general, it would be nice to limit full-motion-video (lots of movement going on all over the screen) to short segments. The video game footage playing for no reason in the background really just makes the video much fatter to download. A lot of video game videos on YouTube and elsewhere are mostly static images. Think of the poors Jim.

The “take it anywhere” seemed less important during the presentation than the Wii-mote 2.0, or Joy Cons. And I honestly don’t blame them. The Wii-mote and its motion controls is what turned the original Wii into a good party system. I know Jim has a low opinion of the 1 2 Switch, but if it is as engaging as Wii Sports, then it’ll be a great thing to pull out when you have company or want to play with your kids. ARMS looks like an interesting fighting game, and again, relies heavily on the motion controls. Splatoon is Splatoon, praise… Read more »

It just feels like “An another Nintendo System.” Not just too little, too late, but sorta’…I dunno, half assed? Like wow, I can play with friends? And its portable! Way to catch up to the Nintendo Gameboy from 89-90, Nintendo!

Hearing Jim Fucking Sterling Son talking about Nintendo while the Golden Axe music played in the background made me grin from ear to ear for the duration of the video.

Would I buy a Switch? Yes. It’s looking like something I could have plenty of fun with. Would I buy it for the UK price of £280 ($341)? No. It’s going to have to go below £230 ($280) before I begin to consider saving for it, and I’ll probably only buy one if I can get it for less than £200 ($243). Luckily, I have absolutely no qualms with getting it second hand.

I was drinking coffee when you said that “Nintendo had an ample supply” and I spat my coffee on my screen. I thought I damaged the screen because of the intentional video distortion.

Thank god for tricking me. 🙂
