We Happy Few – A Joyless Broken Disaster (Jimpressions)

NEW MERCH SITE COMING SOON!

The utter state We Happy Few was released in is unbelievable. Despite a successful Kickstarter, Gearbox support, and years of development, this mess should never have left Early Access.

Nothing short of a mega patch will fix everything truly messed up about this game. If you can imagine a game bug, any game bug, We Happy Few probably has it.

Increasingly, when I see games with high production incongruously falling prey to incredibly stupid programming, I wonder what this industry has become. Being a programmer myself, I understand that you have to be on the ball–completely–when ensuring that all the business logic in the game works as expected. Having nonsensical movements, error-prone dialogue sequences, NPCs and missions that stop cold because of being blocked by a tiny unexpected obstacle–these are all things that the game designers of yesterday never could afford to get away with. What is it going to take to force these project leads not to sacrifice on… Read more »

Now taking bets on how many weeks it’ll be before somebody says something like “It’s not THAT BAD” or “Well if you just play it and forget it’s a narrative game about drug use and people doing a bad thing during war” (although my favorite “It’s a great game, NO REALLY guys” ….”defense” for lack of a better word has to be the person defending Knack who asked this sage question – that if Knack truly was a bad game, “Then why do I like it?” He was 100% serious.) You know you can’t make that kind of shit up.… Read more »

I’m playing the PC version and I haven’t come across any ridiculous bugs…yet. HOWEVER the game seems to like to force extreme motion blur on the player which gives me a fucking headache after an hour or so of playing…and give no clear display options to turn it off or down. Just generic “post processing” which I think technically is like…4 or so settings rolled into one umbrella. The gameplay is also just…boring. I was bored playing it. It actually made me think about how fun NOLF was…NOLF a fogotten 20+ year old FPS that takes place in a wacky… Read more »

This is just so jaw-droppingly awful, and I think somebody is gaming Steam’s review system, because unless you remove Steam’s new automatic filter and then adjust it to show only reviews other users considered helpful, it shows as “mostly positive”.

Hey Jim, I’m not going to shill or defend the state of the game. I did want to mention one thing I noticed though. On an illegal download site the dev left a comment telling people he understands if they are unable to afford the game and are still excited to play it and asks that if they enjoy it to consider buying the game legally. I just wanted to point out this singular display of good faith from the developer to give credit where it’s due.

In the immortal words of Kelly Bundy: this is a new high low.

This video is the one where I finally had to register. Thank you for taking this mess of a game to task. It’s a buggy poorly performing mess even when everything is working. Frankly the concept, the ideas, design and yes even the story deserved better than this. I had been streaming it, and all the while having to massively disclaimer it. Combats a bloody chore, it’s fetch quest galore. The only things that kept me playing till the end was the delightful jack videos, the music and yes the dark storylines about regret and pain. So once again thank… Read more »

Well. This week’s Podquisition, if y’all discuss this game, should be cathartic. I feel really terrible that Gav has had to play this, I had no idea it was this bad.

But, but, but Jim, that one guy didn’t have any issues with the game, so clearly you’re lying to us.
