That Jimquistion about Beneath a Steel Sky was the first Jimquisition I ever watched. As soon as Jim started talking about the small but detailed location I wondered if he’d bring it up.

Aside from that I’d recommend a youtube video called “Sunk Cost Galaxy – The Ectasy of JPGs” which does a great job of outlining the anti-consumer bullshit in Star Citizen and the shocking way that nightmare project has been funded. Want to know why the fuck someone would pay $3000 for a picture of a spaceship? This video can tell you why.

Please, PLEASE tell me those Prince of Bell Air segments are not actual politicians and it’s just a joke.

In contrast to these Ubisoft-esque vast and increasingly-boring sandboxes, I’m still greatly anticipating the realisation of Warren Spector’s idea of the “One City Block” game. The idea of a small, but highly detailed and interconnected game with multiple systems interacting would be incredible. A few games have come close, but I don’t think we’re there yet. Anyone have some recommendations for some hidden gems that have achieved, or come close to achieving, this type of game?

While Jim’s right about content > map size, I can tell Yakuza 0 is rubbish, because there’s no way you’d be able to pick up the doll in the grabber machine for real.

So in other news, Splatoon is finally coming to PC tomorrow in the way of Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash! Jim will undoubtedly be all over this one. Just Google the YouTube trailer, you will not be disappointed.

I LOVE Yakuza. I always wondered why Jim was never enamored with Yakuza. Turns out, he just never played it! which is probably the case with most everyone else too.

I spent WAY too much time in Yakuza 5, I think, doing those cab driving missions. Races and Fares. Fares and Races. Pimpin’ that Whip.

Long time viewer/reader/listener, first time commentor – I’m really glad someone feels the same way about Yakuza! I’ve been thinking this exact stuff about Yakuza for years, ever since I was part of the localisation begging process for number 3 on the PS3. The density of these games is absurd – there are few games that allow this level of just jumping in and finding things. The discovery of a subquest in Yakuza actually has meaningful reward – not just another pretty radio tower skyline camera pan. It’s beyond compare to something like a Ubisoft game with its oodles and… Read more »

I can only compare Witcher with a few of the open world games (Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3), but Wicther 3, at least, also does it right (though siginificantly less compact, I think, that the aforemention Yakukza. I’ve been playing w3 straight since I started a week or two ago and (as of tpday) I’m up to 97 hours and am showing no signs of slowing down… Unlike the aforementioned, which I played progressively less of an never finished. Some of that is due to the map (or at least the mods I’m using and the map) signposting stuff [1] and a lot… Read more »

I won’t deny it, I spend a lot of time in open world games. And I will happily do collectathons and liberate every tower and base. But I do relish smaller, more tightly designed maps packed with unique content.

Reminds me (negatively) of last year’s Agents of Mayhem. It’s map size was comparatively small, to other games in its genre. It could have made more a more intimate feel of the gameworld. But they didn’t fill it with anything interesting to do. All the content was a variation of the same mediocre run and gun.

What? Fucking what? I….. that…… What the hell, America? A…….. [♪SKELETON WARRIORS♫]. Oh, that’s just my response to the politicians rapping bit. Now, for the Jimquisition’s thoughts… er… i mean, my thoughts on this one. Well, Jim, the reason why none of us hunted you down, kidnapped you, strapped you to a stretcher and forced you to play Yakazu is because of er… Chip! Yes, it was Chip who failed to do this! It is a massive shame that sidequests with actual content are becoming rare. I mean, look at Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age Inquisiton. Most sidequests in… Read more »
