YouTube Has A YouTube Problem (The Jimquisition)

This one has… been a long time coming. The unscripted part at the end has… been a long time coming.

How long does YouTube itself have? Long enough, I reckon, to fuck up a hell of a lot more between now and whenever it gets what it deserves.

Oh shit, I said fuck in the video description. I guess no sexual penis is going to want to vaginally advertise with my anus now. What a load of LGBTQ areolas.

Advertisers shouldn’t have morals or care what their ads are attached to. They’re drastically limiting who sees their ads, which is bad for brand recognition. Commercials are generally horrible, cringy, unfunny, intellectually insulting, & too long (or short, hilarious, & mindbogglingly confusing in Asia), & they know it but they don’t care if you find the ads annoying or will actively avoid buying their products because of how bad their ads are; all they care about is brand recognition. Lastly, nearly everyone uses Adblock anyway, so they should just take whatever eyes they can get. It’s not like the days… Read more »

2 questions.

Why was the music different?

How do I give jim a donation of cash ?

Patreon and Born Depressed was the previous theme tune which was perhaps more fitting for this one than Big Ego.

It’s an old show theme. Now it’s used for those special “just don’t fucking get used to it” moments.

Jim.

Please write about the starwars battlefront beta crates loot box issue before it launches in the hope they’ll time it down as its insanely overt and pushy.

Excellent as always jim.

The video could have been better as at points some visual clues explaining the things I knew nothing about would have helped but as you say it’s a mess and something needs to be done which starts with someone saying something. I think that pewpewcutuedie chap should just vanish too while we’re at it but that’s my personal view.

Thank God for people like you him and I guess you’re included in that select elite group of dildo loving bogling bonkers and the world is a better place because of it!

It may not have been deleted the comments section is a little weird at times. Certain things don’t appear to post but appear hours later or comments that you may not have previously seen may show up later than they were posted.

For me a proper job is one that you moan and complain about… congratulations Youtube, by screwing over your biggest assets, YouTuber can now be included into the Peguin Published Bumper Book of Proper Jobs! As for what they are doing, YouTube made a big mistake not letting people contribute to channels through the site itself. Consequently content creators looked to other means of supporting themselves. Its hard now to stop people using that third party site to support content. Adding a subscription option now might be too late. Also their lack of communication makes me think they see YouTubers… Read more »

I know Jim said that he won’t be “upping sticks” but I just wanted to say that I come directly to The Jimquisition dot com to watch these videos. This website is in my bookmarks, youtube isn’t. And honestly, I would be thrilled if I didn’t have to visit Youtube to see all the other Jim content (Jimtent?) because for a start, every time I have to look at the start page of that website I feel dirty, like a dirty old man was leering at me. That’s the feeling I get from YouTube. Like it’s leering at me. And… Read more »

Thing is, the videos themselves are still hosted on utube, even if you watch embedded here. Content creators could, in principle, host them and use html5 to play them, but then again there are content distribution networks without which could make it too slow OR, like Jim said in the video, most utubers need the platform to reach their audience.

I might…if it was about me…or my girlfriend whose a porn star but I don’t like it when men look at her even on video so she assures me only women watch breast only porn.

Oh good. Glad to see that requiring sign ups to comment isn’t going to keep out the crazies and ‘lol random’ spammers. I was worried the level of discourse was going to get too high and too productive here.

Chris

I am shocked, /SHOCKED/ I tell you, that someone in the tabletop world has shitty views on women and uses harassment to try to intimidate people who question them.

It’s not just video gamers, nerd culture as a whole needs to deal with this shit, this is why I don’t like going into a game or comics store now to look for a D&D group the way I once would have.

I wholeheartedly agree with the final rant. If everyone will forgive my long blithering diatribe (I’m afraid once I get started, I just tend to ramble on and on and on…) While I am not a youtuber, I am in a similar sort of position and I have every sympathy with the ladies and gentleman who make their living on Youtube. My own day job is equally trivial-in-the-grand schemes of things as video games: designing CAD models for the 3D printing, primarily for wargames. It is not, shall we say, a job that pays highly. Let me be brutally honest… Read more »

Your story sounds similar to mine, I too still live with my parents, my dad often needs my help quite a bit with his Sawmill business so i’ve got good reasons not to leave home, there’s really nothing to be gained for anyone in my family if I do leave.

I think I have to paraphrase a point spoken by another Youtuber whose been around from the Beginning. If we’re gonna unfuck YouTube, it would need a solid, concentrated effort from YouTube, the people watching YouTube Videos and it’s Content Creators. That’s how much of a mess it’s gotten.

It might just be easier to have all the Content Creators jump ship to a new site that’ll actually take care of it’s customer base.

As someone who has plans of starting as a content creator sometime soon, the situation with Youtube is really worrying. And it’s not like I got much in the way of options of where to put any content I make. Unless you’re already a large name, you can’t just say “Go to my own site or go to this other thing” without being stabilished in youtube first.

Chris Topher

Maybe make video like pirate bay and vuze. There’s so many torrent sites and you have multiple download options but all the content is available to all. So you upload your stuff to whatever and then anyone can get it via 1 of xxx sites…?

Also Jim, thank you for that before the credits rant. That needs to be said, and more of society have to realize this. The world is no longer just about 9-5s as an income, the world has grown and there are many many different types of jobs from all aspects of life. If you do it, and make money regularly from it, it’s a job! Simple as that. I am curious, did blue collar workers say the same thing to white collar workers when white collar began to become more prevalent in the work force “Get a real job?” or… Read more »

Technology has also allowed for a massive consolidation of wealth and power into the hands of a tiny class of investors who can tell us all we’re better off eating their table scraps and working ‘gigs’ with no stability or benefits while an elite of tech workers make amounts of money unimaginable to us to code algorithms that screw over everyone else.

So you know, you have to take the good and the bad with how technology has ‘improved’ the workforce.

Jiryn

Very good point, you sadly have to take the good with the bad.
But my point was how the idea of “Job” has evolved beyond the idea of a 9-5 in an office/factory every day.

I have some family members who still feel you can go building to building “Pounding the Pavement” and have a job by the end of the day, especially if they talk to a manager.

I’ve always wondered why you censor the word “[♪SKELETON WARRIORS♫]” with Skeleton Warriors.
While, I fully understand the word is considered one step down beneath the N-word in the States, other countries like Britain and Australia use it regularly and is part of their common vocabulary.

So, I’ve always wondered if you do it to be funny, or was it to keep further action being taken against you video from the YouTube Overlords?

Jim. I’m sorry but… Don’t flatter yourself. You are to YouTube what Robert Romine was to you: a footnote, a scribble on a margin, a meager morsel in the sea of content and money provided by people richer than you. You’re just a buck on the side that YouTube doesn’t want left on the table. Honestly, Jim… You’re willing to pay money for your gimmicks. And it’s a good thing! I just say, maybe find several like-minded individuals and pay for an alternative to YouTube. Don’t wait for something better, be something better. Because if you do… Then all the… Read more »

The amount of money hosting a streaming service like YouTube costs is astronomical, it can’t be paid for by ‘several like minded individuals,’ so what you are proposing is just as unreasonable and pointless as the ‘why did you put your livelihood in the hands of a company’ people. The only way to change things would be through mass organization of content creators to either force YouTube to change or to prove to investors there is money to be made in an alternative. Kind of like, oh, say, what Jim is doing by using his platform to call for. Either… Read more »

You don’t need it to be “like YouTube” though. You don’t need it to be a service for everyone. It can be a platform just for Jim and his partners.

Chris

Except you said he should make something “better” than YouTube for everyone in the game industry who is fed up with it. That’s a huge undertaking that requires literally millions of dollars monthly to host any reasonable amount of content and have it all readily accessible instantly and at the speeds people expect across all platforms. Again, that’s no more useful or constructive as feedback than “get a real job.”

ArtSolopov
Member

1. “Millions of dollars” is a severe overestimation of costs of running a server.
2. Oh FFS. If I said something about someone turning “green with envy”, would you berate me for them not turning into the Hulk? Of course such a project won’t grow overnight. It’d have to start with Jim and, as I said, a close circle of individuals. And stay that way for a while.
3. What’s the alternative? Sitting firmly on YouTube, yelling at Alphabet who doesn’t give a damn because you’re not VEVO?

drownedsummer
Member
drownedsummer

True but it also wouldn’t just be running a server as that is oversimplifying things. You’re talking about putting together an alternative and viable platform, which could be used instead of Youtube that isn’t just simply running a server.

ArtSolopov
Member

Yeah but Chris was talking specifically about hosting.
And yes, it won’t be simple! Dull surprise! But if people want to actually escape YouTube’s hegemony, they should be willing to put effort in, shouldn’t they?

Chris
Member
Ah yes, Jim and other content creators are too lazy then? Because you’re using “effort” specifically as the thing they aren’t putting in as opposed to the massive amounts of capital required to operate even a small scale venture. Housing an audio only podcast that you post weekly on a web server can run hosting costs into hundreds or even thousands a month if you are popular. That’s without hd video which is exponentially more expensive to stream, without the kind of daily content Jim produces and would have to store all of, and without the cost of making your… Read more »

Chris

1) And “running a server” is a severe under estimation of the task you’re demanding Jim perform rather than voice his displeasure with the current system. He wouldn’t be hosting a few videos for himself and some friends, he’d be building a platform to replace YouTube’s ad revenue (remember most of the content he makes, not to mention the other producers, is still ad supported) and viewership. Otherwise you’re asking him and others to take a huge hit to their personal income to prove a point. 2. I’m sorry for taking the words you say as serious arguments. Trust me,… Read more »

1. How do you count “the majority”? Given how much TotalBiscuit complained about the ads, I thought that the majority of Jim’s money came from Patreon. And no, I don’t think that this hypothetical platform should replace YouTube’s ad revenue. That’s what Patreon, Ko-Fi et al. are for. 2. I don’t expect anyone to dump YouTube altogether. There needs to be an intermediate step, where the content is hosted both on YouTube and the new platform, perhaps an unabridged version on the latter. Heck, some content creators do a similar thing: host their content both on YouTube and some alternate… Read more »

Your boss treats you like shit, you form a union and fight for better treatment. You don’t say “that won’t do any good, the only solution is for us to form our own factory first and work both jobs, just to show him we’re serious.” I want another platform. But the sad truth of our modern, late capitalist, information based economy is that small actors with no capital can’t just form a platform like that any more. What you’re demanding as the only alternative isn’t feasible, and saying that creators should shut up unless they put in the “effort” is… Read more »

I’m having trouble finding a constructive point within the condescension. Jim isn’t a big earner for Youtube, so he doesn’t get to voice some valid criticisms?

It’s more of “Jim isn’t a big earner for YouTube, so no matter how many of those episodes we’ll get, YouTube won’t listen”.

Nitrium

It’s not about how much money he makes, but how much influence he has. If every YouTuber took his message on board and told their viewers the same story, Google, sorry Alphabet, will have take notice or risk losing any remaining goodwill for the entire thing. You have to start somewhere, right?

ArtSolopov

ArtSolopov

And how much influence exactly he has?
“Older” (that is, 3-6 months old) Jimquisition videos rack up around 500-600 thousand views.
“If Google was a guy” videos by CollegeHumor have 30-40 million views.
A cute “bunnies in cups” video has has 1.7 million views.
Ducktales 2017 theme has 4 million views.
LivingTombstone’s music videos clock at 7-10 million views, 300-400 thousand if they’re instrumentals.

What kind of influence are we talking here?

What world do you live in?

ArtSolopov

I feel like a lot of YouTube’s costs come from the fact that a) they need to constantly clean the site from literal pirates, b) they need to handle ludicrous amounts of data for all the Gangnam Style viewers, c) they have to handle monetization. Jim and co can shave off those costs.

Chris Topher

I don’t agree with everything but you are corrext that jim is small potaotesnin the grand scheme but at what he does he is at the forefront and being small is irrelevant if he’s leading the pack.

And surely we should care about the little guy just as much as everyone starts small and grows… and they need that opportunity to grow without being ducked over.
